The Ultimate Pizza Lover’s Pizza Sauce Recipe

Servings: 4 people


  • 2 tbsp. olive oil extra virgin
  • 1 tbsp. butter
  • ½ cup onion
  • ¼ cup celery finely chopped
  • 1 medium garlic clove finely minced
  • 18 oz. tomato sauce plain
  • 16 oz. tomato paste
  • 3 tbsp. parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 tsp. basil dried
  • 1 tsp. oregano dried
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ¼ tsp. sugar
  • ¼ tsp. black pepper
  • 1 small to medium bay leaf
  • 1 tsp. fennel seeds


  • In a large skillet, melt the olive oil with the butter
  • Then add the chopped onions and celery and the minced garlic and saute until all are soft and translucent.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce and paste and mix until smooth.
  • Add the grated Parmesan, basil, oregano, salt, sugar, black pepper, bay leaf, and fennel seeds, mix well, and bring to a slow simmer.
  • Simmer the sauce mixture for at least 30 minutes, preferably longer for a full bodied, rich tomato taste.
  • Remove the bay leaf from the pizza sauce and discard.
  • Spread thickly on 1 medium sized pizza crust or thinly on 2 crusts.
